Fourteen years ago, my parents, John and Mercedes Burkavage, began a small olive oil shop in Reno as a passion project rooted in curiosity and hospitality.
What started as a simple love for exceptional extra virgin olive oils and aged balsamics quickly evolved into something much deeper, a true appreciation for the craft behind them. They partnered with a supplier who sources from both large and small-batch producers around the world, representing the top five percent of olive oils and balsamics available globally.
Through harvest cycles, tastings, and countless conversations with customers, their shop became a place where people discovered that olive oil isn’t just an ingredient, it’s an experience.
When my parents were ready to retire, Alex and I were honored to carry the torch. We didn’t just take over the business, we reimagined it while protecting its heart.
Today, Foghorn Tasting Room is built on the foundation they created, but with our own signature woven in: thoughtful food pairings, special wines and beers, simple seasonal plates, and an experience that turns first-time tasters into lifelong olive oil lovers. We believe the best olive oils and balsamics in the world deserve more than a shelf, they deserve a story, a pour, and a place at the table.
Rooted in this community, we balance family life, healthcare careers, and entrepreneurship with intention. We’re raising two boys here, and this town is home in every sense of the word. Foghorn isn’t just a business to us, it’s part of our family’s rhythm. It’s Saturday afternoons with regulars, teaching someone the difference between robust and delicate EVOO, sharing recipes, laughter, and genuine hospitality. My parents built something beautiful over 14 years. We’re simply grateful to continue the story, honoring where it began while thoughtfully shaping where it’s going.
